The UM System Board of Curators highlighted infrastructure development and expansion for the Columbia campus at its meeting Thursday in Springfield.
Projects include removing street parking on Sixth Street and adding a bike lane, removing the Hitt Street visitor parking lot outside the MU Student Center and replacing it with a food truck court, adding seating in the Arts and Science Mall, and adding and improving research facilities.
Board members said the new framework seeks to create a more connected and safe campus while investing in new endeavors.
Jessica Leonard, the university’s main architect on the project, said the board is thinking about pedestrian crossings and restricting vehicular access at times of day along busy corridors, such as Hitt Street, to provide greater safety in the core of campus.
Some board members had issues with giving vehicles less priority.
