Symposium helping teachers to refresh and reconnect before school starts [Video]

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – The organizers of the Northeast Louisiana Teacher’s Symposium want to help reduce the growing number of teachers leaving the profession.

Faith Gramillion helped create the event helping teachers find what they originally loved about teaching.

“Our state and community and other parts of the world are having a significant reduction in teachers. The retention is not there. The recruiting is not there,” said Gramillion.

With double the attendees from last year, the second year of the symposium looks promising.

A study from the U.S. Department of Education that came out this year found that in 2022, teachers with 13 or more years of experience in public school, 9% left the classroom.

In a survey of those who are attending the symposium, one important question was asked.

“What support can our community give to you to help you make it through the year? Over 25% of the attendees said mental health and Wellness,” said Gramillion.

Communication was second, and compensation came in third.
