Gilad Kariv’s life has been a tapestry woven with strands of faith, law, social activism, and political engagement, anchored firmly in the cultural and academic soil of Tel Aviv. His journey began in the vibrant milieu of his hometown, where his educational path took shape at Lady Davis High School. It was during these formative years that Kariv found his spiritual calling within the Reform Movement, connecting with Beit Daniel Synagogue, a hub for progressive Judaism in Tel Aviv.

Upon completing high school, Kariv devoted himself to national service through the Hebrew Scouts, where he was instrumental in creating educational programs. His commitment to service extended to his tenure in the Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Corps, where he not only served with distinction in the elite Haman Talpiot program but also emerged as an officer recognized for his exceptional performance.

Kariv’s academic pursuits led him to the halls of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he melded his passion for Jewish tradition with the rigors of legal studies, obtaining his law degree alongside a degree in Jewish studies. This dual expertise in law and tradition was further honed at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem, where he achieved a master’s degree in Jewish studies and subsequently earned his rabbinical ordination.
