When Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust opened a lottery for a home priced at just a fraction of its market value, they expected to receive a deluge of applications. Instead, they only received six. KHHT offers affordable homes to working families and seniors. When one of their buyers decided to move out, they saw it as a good opportunity to try a lottery system. They listed a three-bedroom duplex at 1 Briggs Way for $326,000. “We know that there was interest,” said KHHT executive director Larissa Crockett. “We know that there were lots of people learning more about it. What we don’t understand is why fewer people applied than we were truly expecting.”There are strict eligibility requirements and only half of the applicants qualified.
