WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is in Washington for a state visit with President Joe Biden. However, prior to heading to the White House, the prime minister honored a former Japanese American U.S. Senator.
Kishida visited the National Japanese American Memorial to pay his respects to the late Sen. Daniel Inouye from Hawaii. The prime minister laid a wreath, bowed and offered a silent prayer to commemorate what would have been Senator Inouye’s 100th birthday.
“This is a momentous day for me and a momentous day for my family. We are truly humbled by this,” said Senator Inouye’s son Ken.
Kishida also helped plant a Yoshino cherry tree at the memorial. It is seen as a symbolic gesture because the planting of the trees in Washington started more than 100 years ago as a gift of friendship from Japan to the U.S.
