When Canterbury playmaker Matt Burton launched a torpedo bomb just before half-time on Monday Fox League commentator Andrew Voss exclaimed: “That’s big! Thoughts and prayers. Oh you’re [Gutherson] no hope!” as the ball descended and swirled out of the falling fullback’s grasp.

But just how high did Burton’s kick go?

In the hope of trying to find out exactly how high Burton kicked the ball, this masthead contacted two scientists at the University of NSW – and after crunching the numbers, they were 95 per cent certain Burton’s kick travelled 33.68m, with a 50cm margin of error.

In the old scale, that is more than 100 feet.
