City of Refuge Summer Market aims to welcome refugees | Mid-Missouri News [Video]

Different languages of refugees, music from performers and children playing were all sounds heard in Columbia Saturday morning.

Columbia locals gathered at City of Refuge for the new City of Refuge Summer Market. The goal of the event is for refugees from all over to have a common space to sell handmade art, clothing, candles, woodworking and other gifts.

City of Refuge is a nonprofit organization that aims to help those seeking refuge in mid-Missouri by working alongside them, providing education, shelter and development opportunities.

Garret Rucinski is the director of engagement for City of Refuge and one of the market’s organizers. He says that not only is this an opportunity for refugees to sell their products, but it’s also a way for them to feel welcomed by the community.
