It marks the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who went on to establish Buddhism and was thereafter known as Gautama Buddha. Archaeological evidence and Buddhist tradition both indicate that Gautama Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, between 563 and 483 BCE.
