US Forest Service seeking public feedback on northern Idaho projects [Video]

SANDPOINT, Idaho – The US Forest Service is requesting public feedback on a proposed thinning of trees around Priest Lake, Bonners Ferry and the Sandpoint Ranger Districts.

According to the Forest Service, thinning the trees would promote the ecological health of the region while reducing the risk of wildfires.

“If left unchecked, these stands will create a fire hazard while crowding out desirable species that need more sunlight, like western white pine, western larch, and ponderosa pine,” the Forest Service said.

The full project plan is available on the United States Department of Agriculture’s website.

“The project would only use mechanical methods, like workers with chainsaws or loppers, to fell trees less than 7 inches in diameter and pile them for burning or mastication,” the Forest Service said.

Those interested in offering public comment can submit their thoughts online.
