The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced a new recreational fishing regulation for Hudson River striped bass for the 2024 season, which begins May 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

The new regulation sets a minimum size limit of 23 inches for striped bass caught in the Hudson River and tributaries north of the George Washington Bridge. The previous minimum size limit for keeping Hudson River striped bass was 18 inches. The maximum size limit is still 28 inches.

Striped bass season length and bag limit remain unchanged, with targeted angling allowed between April 1 and Nov. 30, 2024, and a one fish bag limit.

The new regulation is a response to a large increase in the coastal recreational harvest of striped bass in 2022, and repeated years of poor reproductive success in the Chesapeake Bay, DEC said.
