The New Orleans Criminal Justice Complex is crumbling. Many buildings, both those sitting stagnant for 20 years and others occupied, are filled with black mold and rats. As the New Orleans Police Department prepares for a likely move out of the old headquarters building, some are concerned it will just become another eyesore, joining the rest nearby.The old jail, called the sheriff’s “Community Corrections Center” in Mid-City has been vacant since Hurricane Katrina wiped it out in 2005. It now sits spray-painted, abandoned and unkempt. It opened in the 1960s and was used by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s office to house inmates.
