CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Communities across the Lowcountry took time to pray Thursday as part of National Day of Prayer.

St. Andrew’s Church in Mount Pleasant was one of several churches to mark the annual event.

Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie led a prayer for government. Other prayers focused on the military, business, churches and education. Live 5 News anchor Ann McGill was invited to participate by delivering a prayer for the media.

The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 but there was no specific day set aside.

Former U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond led the push to set the first Thursday of May as the appointed day. President Ronald Reagan signed that into law in 1988.
