I Will be the Vine [Video]

This is a gentle hymn about God as the source of life for Christians. The chorus is based on John 15:5, which presents the image of God as the vine and God’s people as branches, while the verses draw from several pieces of scripture.

It was written by Irish Roman Catholic priest, song-writer and performer Liam Lawton (b 1959), and first published by GIA Publications.   Later, it was included in the Irish publication, In Caelo – Songs for a Pilgrim People, and in GIA Publications Gather II and III and RitualSong collections.

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Lawton. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes of the melody are DE F E D_  FA B B G B B A_.
