City of Dubuque working to fill housing needs [Video]

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – From single-family houses to apartments, the City of Dubuque says there aren’t enough housing options, and what inventory there is flies off the market. But city officials said its big push to bring more housing has been yielding big results.

“Right now we will need anything at this point is too large of a gap to have to be specific about what type of housing we need,” said Alexis Steger, Dubuque Housing and Community Development Director.

A 2022 housing study highlighted a need for housing in Dubuque, saying the city would need around 1100 units by 2030 to fill the gap.

And housing and community development director Alexis Steger said they see that need daily.

”We’re so short of units, the moment that we get any rental units online and new, they’re rented immediately,” said Steger.

So the city worked to get developers in the area, offering tax incentives.
