The celebration of Mexican heritage in Chicago was marred by gang violence, prompting the abrupt cancelation of the Cinco de Mayo parade.

Scheduled to kick off at noon on Sunday in the Little Village neighborhood, the event faced disruption after gunfire was detected in the area, prompting intervention from law enforcement.

The decision, made in collaboration with local officials and parade organizers, aimed to ensure public safety amid escalating gang-related incidents in the area, Fox 32 Chicago reports.

Before chaos descended, the parade route buzzed with excitement as children reveled in the festivities, enjoying horse rides, traditional music, and dancing.

However, the atmosphere soured just an hour after the parade commenced as rival gangs clashed along the route, leading to the arrest of 25 gang members, some of whom were found in possession of firearms.
